Why Seed Systems Matter
Poor-quality fingerlings are the single largest cause of failed tilapia cycles in Southern Africa. Farmers invest in feed, labour, and infrastructure, only to see slow growth, high mortality, and unpredictable harvests — because the seed itself was untraceable, unimproved, or diseased.

Tilapia Centre of Excellence partners with GenoMar Genetics — one of the world’s leading tilapia breeding companies — to bring improved, high-performance genetics to Zambian and Southern African farmers.
Through this partnership, farmers gain access to fingerlings with:
• Faster growth rates, reducing time to market
• Better feed conversion ratios, reducing the largest input cost
• Greater resistance to common diseases
• More uniform size at harvest, improving market price
This is not genetic modification. It is selective breeding, the same approach that transformed poultry and pig production globally, now applied responsibly to tilapia in the region.
Solving the Seed Bottleneck
Zambia’s tilapia sector is constrained less by demand than by supply of quality seed. Most smallholder farmers currently source fingerlings from informal or unverified hatcheries, with the following consequences:
• Up to 40% mortality in the first month after stocking
• Slow and uneven growth, extending cycle length by weeks
• Higher feed costs per kilogram of fish produced
• Reduced market value due to size variation
Tilapia Centre of Excellence works with certified partner hatcheries, government regulators, and farmer organisations to build a formal seed supply chain that is transparent, traceable, and trusted. Every fingerling we distribute is certified, health-screened, and traceable back to its broodstock line.
Biosecure Hatchery Systems
The best genetics in the world mean nothing if the hatchery is not biosecure. Disease outbreaks in hatcheries can wipe out an entire production cycle and set a farmer back months.
Our hatchery standards align with WOAH (World Organisation for Animal Health) protocols and Zambia’s national aquatic animal health framework. They cover:
• Water source treatment and quality monitoring
• Broodstock quarantine and health screening
• Equipment disinfection protocols between tanks
• Disease surveillance and rapid response procedures
• Full traceability from broodstock to fingerling
Looking Ahead
Over the next three years, Tilapia Centre of Excellence aims to:
• Certify at least five commercial hatcheries across Zambia to a common national standard
• Distribute more than 5 million certified fingerlings to smallholder farmers
• Establish a national seed traceability database, accessible to farmers and regulators
• Bring the Kafue bream to commercial production for the first time at scale
• Publish annual seed quality reports tracking progress against national targets
